Anestimatedonein25,peopleisbornwithNF2,ahereditarytumorsyndromeinwhichvirtuallyeveryoneprogressestodeafnessbecauseofvestibularschwannomas—tumorsgrowingonthenervesresponsibleforhearing.ThetumorsarisefromtheSchwanncellsthatsupportandinsulatenerves.Thesetumorsalsocausebalanceproblemsandbrainstem
